R.I.P. … (Friday Nights) THE ALIBI ROOM

The Alibi Room: Recently, (due to D/T greedy politics and Nofuncouver-like liquor board issues), this long-standing, weekly event was cancelled indefinitely.

Memories:

Every Friday night we dropped the needle on vinyl rarities pulled from the depths of our dusty stacks. With a loose “no requests, no dancing, just sit back and enjoy” policy, we strived to bring the locals an eclectic assortment of sounds ranging from jazz & soul to funky psych blues and ’60s rock from all around the world. There are no Abba or J.T. records in our crates; extraordinary was always the ordinary on Friday nights… …been digging for years.

Located off most beaten paths in a mellow corner of a seemingly “bad” neighbourhood, the Alibi Room is a real slice of Vancouver that is often overlooked. The longish shadowy stroll between Gastown and Railtown is generally enough to keep the beer wolves away; thankfully, the Alibi Room isn’t the kind of place one accidentally falls into.

Although it feels dark, and it is just a few blocks from the infamous Main & Hastings intersection, the immediate surrounding area is actually a fairly well traveled zone largely populated by various types of Vancity hipsters and young professionals: musicians, artists, writers, lawyers, animators and actors…

The new owners of the Alibi Room have breathed life into a rustic sleeping giant in the heart of Vancouver. The atmosphere there is open and charming, the food is simple and delicious, and they offer a wide selection of drinks including a multitude of bottles and kegs with 14 taps downstairs alone.

The upstairs is tall and wide-open with long community tables, a few cozy settings at the back and a long bar across the front side. Downstairs holds seating enough to accommodate several parties, and an additional bar (with full menu service into the evening).

Friday nights at The Alibi Room offered Vancouver a tasteful bite of psychedelic psoul (like no other room in town).

Now, the restaurant is still there, but the turntables have been culled. Our dusty didgets have been put out to pasture; and thankfully, the grass is always greener
